Some people with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) feel just fine. If you feel strong, take advantage of this and protect your long-term health by getting active.
Not everyone with an MPN feels unwell. You may feel fit and energetic and if that’s the case for you it’s great news. “A person with a low risk MPN can run a marathon if he or she wants to”, says Dr Ruben Mesa of the Mayo Clinic (US). And one of the most important things you can do to stay feeling well is to stay active.
Tips for people who feel strong
Stay (or get) fit
Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. Be sure to check with your doctor first, but if you feel well and you have a low-risk MPN, or if your blood cell counts are under good control, you can try just about any sport. Regular walking is a great place to start, but you may feel ready for more. Join a gym, take up swimming or cycling, or even try running a marathon. Want more info? Eat a healthy and sensible diet. Concentrate on nutritious food such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean sources of protein. Avoid energy-sappers like sugary drinks and highly processed foods. Opt instead for heart-healthy choices. It’s never too early to keep an eye on your cholesterol, either.
Even if you feel great, you may feel stressed at just the idea of having an MPN. Complementary therapies such as yoga, meditation, massage and tai chi have all been proven to reduce stress and increase health in several reputable studies.
Drink enough water especially if you are exercising, and take care with alcohol and caffeine to avoid dehydration.
It’s important to stop smoking now if you do smoke.

Stay aware of health risks. It’s very important to do everything you can to protect your overall health when you have an MPN. Whether you’re young or middle-aged, have a physical examination every year. After the age of forty it’s recommended that you check your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure regularly as well.
